Laughter Yoga was created in 1995 by Dr. Madan Kataria, an Indian doctor and yoga practitioner, who was writing a paper for a medical journal titled “Laughter is the Best Medicine”. His research inspired him to create a proactive way for people to experience the rewards of "laughing for no reason", and this method has become known as Laughter Yoga. Laughter Yoga combines the medical benefits of laughter with Yogic breathing exercises in a fun, dynamic session that can have a profound positive impact on our health and well being. Laughter is a gentle exercise that makes us feel good, reduces stress levels, oxygenates the body, reduces blood pressure, reduces anxiety and depression, enhances immune function, and more. Most people recognize that laughter is a natural stress-buster, yet research shows that daily laugh time in adults is down to as little as five minutes or less per day in many countries. This disturbing statistic is just one of the many reasons that in recent years Dr. Kataria has focused on training others, who can then help him share the tremendous benefits of laughter.
Laughter Yoga is practiced around the world at laughter clubs, in the workplace, schools, military and police departments, hospitals, hospice services and more. By practicing it in a group, the laughter exercises almost always lead to real laughter; yet you receive the health benefits whether the laughter is “real” or not. There are currently more than 5000 laughter clubs in 50 countries with new venues opening daily. Laughter Yoga has been featured on many major television networks and shows including CNN’s recent special on “Happiness” hosted by Dr. Sanjay Gupta, ABC News, ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars”, the BBC, networks in Japan, Australia, and Germany, as well as in print publications including TIME magazine, National Geographic, the New York Times, LA Times, London Times, the Wall Street Journal, and more.
